A walk in testing facility – should we run away?

Early in the "Digital Revolution" Doug's recognition of the potential desktop information systems offered set the tone for the next 35 years of his career.  In the mid-80s as Business Manager for the Iowa State Daily and using newly available software Doug taught himself how to develop and use relational database systems to enhance access to information and present it in formats useful for decisions making.  Later Doug moved to ISU's Department of Zoology and proceeded to bring the new technologies to the department along with one of the first departmental networks offering shared resources and email services.  When Internet technologies became available to the public Doug developed an appreciation for the potential that this next generation technology offered to education.  Again, teaching himself HTML, Doug embraced the opportunity and made the Department of Zoology amongst the first in the nation to have a web presence.   

Approached by Dr. Thomas Ingebritsen in 1996 Doug turned his attention to Internet education and was one of the initial developers for ProjectBio, a project that delivered narrated PowerPoint lectures to distance students.Soon other courses were developed and Doug received funding to visit most of Iowa's 357 school districts introducing the school and PSEO students to this new opportunity in distance education.  In the spring of 2003 Doug was asked by the Chairman for the Department of Zoology, "What do you see as the future technological needs of the department?" to which he replied, "Computers to be used as a dedicated testing center."  Funding for the first testing center was received and in the fall of 2003 those 24 terminals were the first of over 250 testing center terminals used today to administer nearly 100,000 exams and serve over 10,000 students each semester.
